Northern Arizona Vacation, March 31 - April4, 1994

We spent four fun-packed days touring northern Arizona over the weekend, March 31st, to April 3rd.

First, we visited a mining ghost town named Jerome. It is anything but a ghost town. It is a community of artists tucked away on top of a mountain.

Then we toured Sedona, famous for artists and spiritualist types. It was very beautiful with its huge red rocks everywhere we looked. We spent the night here.

Next, toward the Grand Canyon, but first we stopped at Meteor Crater. It is the largest undisturbed crater in the world and it is a mile across. Fascinating!

Farther up the road, we stopped to see Sunset Crater. It is a crater left by a recent extinct volcano. There are lava flows to be seen and the landscape is completely covered with cinders for miles and miles.

Onward and finally we arrived at the Grand Canyon. The sun was going down and we saw some beautiful reflections on the canyon. We stayed at El Tovar right on the canyon rim. In the morning, we did the whole tour. The scene is quite breathtaking and majestic.

Continuing on, we made our way northeast toward Utah to visit Monument Valley. It is on a Navajo reservation. It looked just like those famous photographs. We shot many pictures on this mini-vacation. Tours are available and the Navajo guides will take you all through the valley.

Now to my personal favorite..Canyon De Chelley (pronounced "SHAY"). It is a very large canyon in the northeast part of the state, also on the Navajo reservation. We stayed there for the night. The walls of the canyon are orange-pink in color and smoothed by the wind. The Navajo guides will take you deep inside where the indians still live and farm today. This is a site of an ancient Anasazi nation. They were cliff dwellers and the ruins are scattered throughout the Canyon. This is a very peaceful place and I would love to go back there. A river runs through and the rocks are constantly changing. It was beautiful and tranquil there.

We also visited other indian ruins near Sunset Crater, called Wupatki Ruins. These were pueblo type ruins and very ancient also.
